UNITED REFORM CHURCH SUNDAY SCHOOL

Three London-based photographers conduct an exploration of the emotions aroused by spaces. These contemporary photographs are shown to advantage in this wonderfully restored building.

JAX MURRAY PHOTOGRAPHY

THE FOYER, CHEESE AND GRAIN

Jax Murray photographyJax is a freelance photographer based in Frome. This series of images are from Durban, South Africa, and reflect the positive energy apparent throughout the country. They are shot from the sea swimmers perspective with low grain definition colour film, using a plastic camera housed in an underwater casing.

10am – 5pm every day during the Festival

Prizewinning entries for the third annual competition for local artists and craftspeople are displayed in the main gallery window. Categories include 2D artwork; small- and large-scale 3D artwork, textiles and photography. Open pottery studio and exhibition by Jenny Barton and Everton Byfield. Sculptures on display in the walled garden.

Justin Quinnell
This exhibition, lasting for the duration of the Festival, will be the culmination of the photography workshop. It comprises images produced during the workshop and cameras fabricated from the most unexpected materials. For workshop and talk see main brochure.

EAST COMES WEST
Tim Knight
The works are acrylics on canvas and this is their premier showing. They depict the artist’s response to the East Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, from Ipswich to Lowestoft.

WATER, PAPER, CHALK
David Chandler
A selection of watercolour abstracts and early collages and chalk drawings. The man who teaches Frome to paint takes time out from the classroom.

STEEL AND STONE
Jeff Body and Peter Osborne
The Yard at the Griffin
Jeff Body, innovative Mendip-based sculptor, works predominantly in stone, plaster and concrete, and uses moulding techniques to create multiples and variations. He works regularly with blacksmith/sculptor Peter Osborne and is a founder of Mendip productions. Peter Osborne is an award-winning blacksmith specialising in both fine quality traditional blacksmithing and contemporary ironwork. As he mainly works to commission, each piece is unique.

ANIMATION COMPETITION

The Milk Street Brewery is holding its first animation competition. A cup will be awarded to the entry which is best regarded by the panel of judges. All entries must be DVD or PC-ready and sent to The Milk St Brewery, c/o 9a, Stony St, Frome, BA11 1BU by Monday 21st June. For more information call 01373 454150.

 

FROME SODA (Society for Disabled Artists)

ST JOHN'S CHURCH

10am – 4pm (excludes Sun)

Frome SODA and a group pf blind and partially-sighted potters jointly present this exhibition. See examples of their work in a variety of media, including watercolours, silk painting and pastels, together with some unusual pottery.

ARTISTS IN CONTRAST

THE SHED GALLERY AND GARDENS,
7 LITTLE KEYFORD LANE

Sat 3–5 July, 10am–5pm

Jenny Collins, landscape painter and Sholto Walker, figurative artist and illustrator will be showing some examples of their recent work. Visitors are also invited to explore daylily specialist Duncan Skene’s richly planted garden.

HENRY PIPER: SCULPTOR
Henry’s sculptures have a vivid life and character of their own. Much of his work is assembled from discarded bits and pieces, although he also carves in stone.

ANTHONY ROGERS: SCULPTOR IN WOOD
Anthony has exhibited widely throughout the UK. His work relates to the swirling, dynamic energy of nature.

Helga Watkins - bakerHELGA WATKINS: BAKER
Helga creates sculptural pieces in kiln and hot cast glass. Her work is concerned with the transmission of light and energy.

NEIL WILKIN: GLASSMAKER
Working from his studio in Frome, Neil designs and creates glass forms derived from the natural world, with particular emphasis on plants.

ART AT THE GARDEN CAFE

(9am–5pm plus evening events)

Sonje Hibbert, Andy Gradwell, Annemieke Lumsden, Helen Felton, Mary Crawford
Sonje Hibbert has photographed and drawn a variety of ethnic cultures to inform her ceramic sculptures exploring the female form.
Andy Gradwell, exhibiting in the café, is showing recent paintings about time and place, whether home or travelling. Themes, colour and form are dictated by remembered experience and other relevant material.
Annemieke Lumsden trained as a typographical designer, then worked as a children’s illustrator and glass engraver. Now a painter and drawer, she is fascinated by different forms of life.

BELT AND BRACES

THE GARDEN AT THE GARDEN CAFE

Helen Felton works and exhibits in a variety of media including wire, photography, drawing materials, ink and bleach. Themes which interest her at the moment are contained spaces (nests and shelters), contrasts and transformation.
