treasure hunt Following the success of last year's concerts, we are delighted to announce that there is to be a second spectacular musical weekend. Live music set under the stars in the grounds of beautiful Marston House will be one of the festival highlights. We do hope you are able to join us on one, if not both, of these lovely evenings. You are invited to come along and picnic on a summer's evening whilst enjoying the wonderful music. There will also be a stunning firework finale on the night of the Proms. Friday 9 July: The Glenn Miller Orchestra Brochure with full details and booking form (245k PDF) PDF files: All brochures and booking forms are PDF files and you will need Acrobat Reader to open them. If you need to install this application, click here to go to the Adobe site, where you can download a free copy. After the success of last year's gargantuan performance of Berlioz's Grande Messe des Morts, involving over 200 musicians, we tackle one of the greatest masterpieces of the 19th Century in Verdi's celebrated Requiem. This is a sacred work of awesome dramatic content, which is an absolute must for any chorister and a fantastic challenge for orchestral musicians alike. We are particularly pleased to announce the return of Jason Thornton as conductor, collaborating with Adrian Partington, one of the finest choral directors in the South West, as well as a line up of four highly accomplished professional soloists. The musical intensity of the weekend is only matched by the wonderful social atmosphere and, as part of this year's summer school, why not come to our Proms Concert at Marston House on the Saturday Night (see above) with the rest of the choir and orchestra at a specially reduced ticket price? This year we’ve looked beyond just the great music, and have invited Café Kazaam to entertain us with their brand of surrealist Cabaret. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved, with workshops in singing, dancing and crafts for all ages and two special children’s events – Paperplay’s performance of Beauty and the Beast, and a Family Ceilidh with Monster Massive. The DJ nights in the Undercroft offer the opportunity to dance late into the night to local DJs and a special Free Decks night for young people. Generally, there’s more on offer for young people this year with Frock Idols offering music workshops for girls, and Will Angeloro enlightening us on the mystical art of DJ-ing. A bar will be open every evening, and on selected evenings there’ll be food available in the Undercroft before the gig. Refreshments will be on offer after every workshop. The Festival Club is an incredibly popular part of Frome Festival and
we urge you to book tickets well in advance to avoid disappointment. Please
also book food in advance (where possible) when you buy your tickets. We
look forward to welcoming you to the Festival Club. It’s going
to be a great party! THE GREAT FROME FESTIVAL TREASURE HUNT Wassail Games are setting another of their family treasure hunts to both challenge you and get you out in to the fresh air! The treasure this year is a fabulous handcrafted piece of jewellery kindly donated by Frome goldsmith Annette Gabbedey. There will also be a mystery prize for the runner-up. You do not need prior knowledge of Frome or any specialist equipment: a pen, sense of humour and keen eye are all that is required. So why not stretch your mind and legs with a gentle stroll around our beautiful town? Treasure Hunt Maps are £3 and can be purchased from either Wassail Games or Annette Gabbedey on Catherine Hill, and from the Tourist Information Centre. Maps go on sale Friday June 25th and the winner will be announced at FromeGamesCon on Sunday 11th July. Festival Folk, a new addition to the Frome Festival, celebrates the best of British Folk Music in a line-up of exceptional events at the Granary. The Festival is delighted that Cara Dillon will perform an intimate concert of Irish folk on Wednesday 7th July. On the following Friday, Cecil Sharp’s Big Night Out features the best traditional musicians, singers and step dancers in the area, and on the Saturday, Fred Wedlock adds his unique style of humour to the Festival. Rounding off the Festival Folk programme, we are proud to have secured John Kirkpatrick for both a concert and workshop. Early booking is advised for all the Festival Folk shows. If you’re bringing a picnic to the festival, Frome’s Millennium Green offers a peaceful, green breathing space. Sit at the rustic picnic tables, enjoy views of the townscape and the Somerset countryside and listen to the birdsong (green woodpeckers, sustained by the green’s ancient anthills, are an exotic feature). A pocket of nature right in the town, the green can be reached by a climb from Willow Vale (past the houses, under the railway bridge, and left over the stone stile) or by car (level access from North Parade car park). |
