Over 600 of Gerard Hoffnung’s superb cartoon illustrations will be on show over the period of the festival. The exhibition will be opened by Gerard Hoffnung’s widow, Annetta, and will also feature memorabilia connected with his life. See Exhibitions.

5.30pm OPENING PROCESSION

Frome Festival 2005 opens in splendour when students from the Frome Federation of Schools lead a grand Brazilian Rio–style Carnival Samba procession from St John’s Church to the Cheese and Grain, where they will perform a concert. This is a culmination of workshops with Felix Gibbons, who works extensively on the Rio Carnival.

6.30pm FEAST OF FEDERATION MUSIC

This concert will follow the opening procession and will include a showcase item from each school in the area, finishing with a Grand Finale. Before this event, Martin Bax, the Festival Director, will officially open the 2005 festival.

Moya is a fusion of African-jazz, folk and traditional rhythms brought to you from the mountainous Kingdom of Swaziland and the United Kingdom. With Moesha on vocals and Jonathan on guitar; they are joined by some of the UK’s finest musicians. Those attending the Frome Festival last year will recall an unforgettable performance.

8.30pm The Bad Detectives

Following the release of their CD, Get Hip, Let Rip, The Bad Detectives are back doing what they do best – playing live – with a mix of classic covers and home-brewed songs, ranging from Surf to Rock & Roll. So point your boogie feet towards old Milk Street and grab a taste of the rockin’ beat!

Top international musicians Basira Ward (voice featured in blockbuster film Troy), Helen Saunders (clarinet), Cathrine Saunders (flute) join Frome’s own Stephen Marquiss (piano) and composer and jazz giant Marco Anderson for an ambient late-night special. Fresh, innovative new arrangements of classical favourites featuring acoustic and electronic instruments and stunning visuals with a sensuous, chill-out vibe.

9.15pm ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND (2004, 15)

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Celebrate the opening night of the festival with this quirky Charlie Kaufman comedy about love, fate and the complexities of the human mind. A couple (Oscar-nominee Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey) undergo a procedure to erase each other from memory when their relationship sours, but it is only through the process of loss that they discover what they had to begin with.
