Paul Merton has played a significant part in raising the profile of the Frome Festival in the last two years. Having enjoyed his first visit with his Impro Chums in 2006, Paul made the Frome Festival his only live performance last year. Inevitably, tickets sold out for the Impro Chums previous performances within minutes of the Box Office opening.

Paul is is back with us this year as part of a bigger national tour taking in some very large theatres. Frome audiences with have the advantage of seeing the show close up in the more intimate 550 seat setting of the Memorial Theatre.

The "Impro Chums" concept is similar to the TV show that first brought Paul Merton to the wider public attention. As recent satellite re-runs have shown, "Whose Line is it Anyway" provided some of the most spontaneous, timeless, and breathtakingly brilliant comedy, television has produced. Paul's sharp, dry, wit and ability to divert into hilarious streams of consciousness found the ideal home in "Have I Got News For You". This pastiche of a panel game continues a great tradition of topical satire on the small screen. The format has endured for many years, and yet, never seems to tire. Merton, and opposing "team captain" Ian Hislop, make perfect foils. The show's format has often been copied, but never bettered.

Paul Merton is undoubtedly one of the most popular and recognisable comedians in Britain. He has a great passion for silent movies and has toured with a documentary style show featuring many of the greats. Recently, he turned his hand to hosting a documentary for Channel 5 on China, where again, he brings his sense of diversity to the occasion, choosing not to see the Great Wall, but visit a man in a village who hand makes robots from scrap material.

It is a delight to welcome Paul Merton back to the Frome Festival, and we will continue to welcome him back for as long as he is willing to appear.
